There’s been a huge surge in solo female travellers

Solo travel has seen a huge increase and is certainly the trend of 2024, with women in particular spurring on the growth.

“Solo travel allows for greater flexibility and the ability to design itineraries based on you alone, what you want to do and where you want to go, focusing entirely on your own interests; that’s liberating,” Emma shares with 9Travel.
For women, the need for personal growth and mental health or career breaks are some of the biggest reasons they may choose to travel alone.
”Increasing independence, personally and financially, and empowerment are other reasons,” Emma says.
There’s also been a greater emphasis on it even being possible.
“There is a greater focus on solo female travel which makes it feel more secure and more ‘normal’. There are also more companies catering specifically to solo female travellers.”

When it comes to things to considered if you’re a woman looking to set out on a solo adventure, your destination is obviously the key.
“Some destinations are considered better for solo female travellers due to safety, cultural acceptance and ease of navigation,” Emma says.

2. Look like the locals: Don’t draw attention to yourself – save that for when you get home.
3. Make a rough plan for each day: Decide what is important for you that you don’t want to miss.
4. Research cultural events: It’s always great to feel part of the local culture.
5. Plan tours: Group tours are a terrific way to meet others, but you may learn more doing a private tour.

6. Be brave: Look for opportunities to engage with locals.
7. Don’t be afraid to ask: Just as you would help someone in need in your country, people will do the same for you.
8. Eating alone is okay: Enjoy the atmosphere, chat with others, or read your book.  Good idea to sit at the bar to eat if possible – fun to watch the bar tender and easy to chat to others.
9. Send yourself an email: You need a copy of your passport and other crucial details such as logins or bank details. You can easily retrieve these remotely if necessary.
10. Do these things to stay safe and sound:
